. according to multiple sources in europe and the u.s., the intelligence has raised concern about a mumbai-style attack that would create a lot of casualties and a lot of chaos in a short period of time. according to law enforcement sources in the u.s., economic institutions including banks and stock exchanges are among the possible targets. and one of those sources says the belief is that osama bin laden may have signed off on the plan. so who would carry this out? officials say the intel indicates people with western passports who can travel easily throughout europe. one federal law enforcement source says they may not all be european but could be a mix including north africans, pakistanis, and others. the source of much of the information is a german citizen of afghan descent. the man identified as sadiki worked for an airport cleaning company and attended a mosque which was a meeting place for the men behind the september 11th attack. that mosque was shut down this year not long after sadiki's capture. back to you. >> what are u.s. officials saying about it this morning? >> the directo

terror plan, like the terror plot in mumbai that killed 164 people two years ago. osama bin laden apparently approved the plan. no word so far if threats were also made against the united states. now, to the war zone in afghanistan and pakistan. nato says an air strike killed a top al qaeda commander in northern afghanistan along its border with pakistan. the u.s. recently increased the number of drone attacks in pakistan, and this may be due in part to information on the terror plot. drone targets in pakistan include taliban and al qaeda forces and militants linked to al qaeda. and the taliban denied claims made by the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, general david petraeus, that the taliban wants, was in contact with afghan government officials about possible peace talks. there's a lot going on, and we've got the story covered on all fronts. ivan watson in kabul, afghanistan. fred plankton in islamabad, pakistan kninic robertson and i tell us what you know about this first. >> reporter: well, an air strike that took place on saturday according to u.s. and nato spokesmen. usual

mumbai-like tear strike or something of that nature with a limited and fairly near term, a fairly rapid kind of conventional military response. largely as a deterrent to any state, specifically pakistan, tolerating or in any way aiding and abetting such an attack. i am not trying to get into the issue of whether pakistan can do more or whether pakistan deserves criticism as a state for mumbai. i think it could have done more myself. even if it is large retiredisi, retired pakistani intelligence operators who may have had a hand in that, the general sense is that india needs the capability to be a assay to pakistan, we have a way to respond short of all-out war. we no all-out war is not appealing, not really feasible or viable. india has come up with the notion of cold start. it is understandable at one level, but also dangerous at another level. i hope we have a rich discussion on that. one point, i commend india for the restraint issued after mumbai in 2008. most great powers would not have had the kind of restraint. second, to sit in chile absorber such a heinous act -- to absor

scenario had terrorists swarming over tourist hotels, ala mumbai, that's exactly what happened in mumbai, india. there could be plans to hit economic targets in europe including banks and stock exchanges. the target countries were reported to be germany, france and the k, now we are adding denmark. the information came from a german of afghan decent. the mastermind of this operation is the new number three man in al-qaida. with word of this operation becoming public, whether leaked orin tension tphal lee put out there analysts say it's less likely there will be an arrest because those involved will go deeper undercover. it's less like that there will be an attack carried out at this point because the attacker simply wouldn't want to be under this type of scrutiny and that would make european cities somewhat safer at this point. the u.s. has stepped up the number of drone attacks in pakistan and some say there is a clear connection between the heavier pace of those attacks over the past month and the plot in europe suggesting the strikes actually disabled the recent plot. as to any
